A PhD position in Laboratory Astrophysics is available at the LERMA laboratory (Sorbonne University & Paris Observatory, France, https://lerma.obspm.fr/spip.php?rubrique20) under the supervision of Jean-Hugues Fillion and Mathieu Bertin.
The position will start on 2022/2023 academic year for a period of 36 months and is funded by the Ile-de-France region under the program “DIM-ORIGINES”.
Title: Photodesorption studies with Velocity Map Imaging from interstellar ICES.
Motivation and research activity: The impact of UV photons on icy particles can induce the desorption of molecules which are detected by space telescopes exploring the gas phase of cold regions of the interstellar medium (stars and planets formation regions). The understanding of this phenomenon at molecular scale has motivated many laboratory investigations in recent years. This PhD project is an experimental laboratory study of the photodesorption from interstellar ice analogues in the UV/VUV range using a new velocity map imaging (VMI) method. The work plan includes the optimization of a unique experiment (SPICES-VMI) that will be coupled to different UV/VUV photons sources. The investigations with a pulsed VUV laser source at LERMA will first allow the characterization of the desorption mechanisms of neutral particles from CO and H2O films at 10-20 K. This study will be extended on the DESIRS beamline at the French synchrotron facility SOLEIL to characterize the desorption of ions at higher energies and to explore for the first time the photodesorption of amino acids upon circularly polarized light excitation. The purpose is to address the fundamental question of a possible assymmetric photodesorption behavior from chiral molecules, in link with the still open question of the origin of life’s homochirality.
Methodology: The experiments will be performed with the mobile ultra-high vacuum instrument SPICES, equipped with probe techniques necessary for the study of ice desorption (cryogenics (10K), mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, VMI spectrometer) and non-linear optics using high power laser pulses. These investigations will be made in the framework of an international consortium and a close collaboration with a team from the SOLEIL synchrotron facility.
